How to get there from Pettaugh: East out of Pettaugh on the A1120; at Dennington turn left on to the B1116 towards Fressingfield, and then a right (signposted) to Laxfield; when you get to the village centre, with the Guildhall on your right, and the Royal Oak straight ahead, take the lane to the right of the Royal Oak, and then the first left into Gorams Mill Lane; about 15 miles

They say:

"The King’s Head (The Low House) is one of the very few pubs left in Britain that has no bar-counter. You go in the tap room at the back. Beer drinkers survey the array of barrels and request whatever takes their fancy, drawn straight from the barrel, while others can order whatever they usually have. Before you reach the barrels, you pass through a room dominated by an ancient fireplace. Old settles, polished in parts by the backs and bottoms of the long deceasead, surround it in a U-shape, with a table in the middle. Another room, also called the tap room, likewise has one large table and bench seats around it. This is a social pub. We have no juke box or television, and we pride ourselves on still having a sense of tradition, and a slight window into the past.

At the King’s Head we serve traditional, home-made food, and with all of our produce sourced as locally as possible, it’s always seasonal. The vast majority of all our fruit and veg is actually supplied by the extremely talented growers of Laxfield, and arrives almost daily, fresh from their gardens and allotments that morning.

All our meat and fish comes from local suppliers, and we regularly check that their stock is of sound and reputable origin, and that we are receiving the best produce possible."

"Also popularly known as the "low house" this timeless, multi-roomed and thatched building is a classic pub which is always worth a visit. The main room features listed high back settles (now owned by Adnams) set around a small fireplace, whilst the beer is served on gravity direct from a small tap room to rear. A separate dining room (12-3 + 7-9) offers an interesting menu of locally sourced food and including a Sunday roast but NOT on Sunday evening. An enclosed garden and patio to rear is also available. Accommodation available in an outside building. Pub can be difficult to find - just walk through churchyard and exit via lower street access. The building dates from the 16th century, with an 18th century extension."

We say:

We, (a group of 14 Pettaugh Plodders), walked from Walpole to Laxfield on a cold December, Sunday morning, and arrived hungry and thirsty at The Low House with mud on our boots and a dusting of snow on our jackets. Fortunately Nina had booked a table for us and we were shown into a room with a log burner heating the room.

It took a while to get the cars fetched from Walpole, but we soon had drinks organised and could pay attention to the Sunday Lunch menu. Wow! Roast beef or turkey, or a choice of pies: steak and ale, steak and kidney, pheasant and chestnut, local game, or a fish pie. They sounded great, and when they arrived they turned out to be delicious! Everything was freshly cooked on the premises, the vegetables just kept coming, and the waitresses were charming. Oh, and the beer was excellent!

All in all we were very impressed with the quality and value of the food — thoroughly recommended!
